Kona Brewery have always intrigued me. Their packaging is very eye catching and their beer descriptions sound delicious so I decided it was time for me to give them a try. I bought a 12pk from Walmart in the USA for less than a 6pk costs here- sucks for us!
Kona Brewery – Kono Hawaii
12pk Price: $15.49 – Walmart at Tulalip
Fire Rock Pale Ale
Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 6%
This beer is pretty mild so if you want a flavourful pale ale than this isn’t your beer. It has a mild bitterness with a hint of citrus. Overall it’s a decent beer but I wouldn’t spend BC prices in it. If you’re across the boarder or somewhere without crazy liquor taxes and you want a beer to chill with this beer is worth a try.
Longboard Island Lager
Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 4.6%
This one is my favourite Kona beer which is funny because I usually don’t care for lagers. Its a super easy drinking summer time beer. It smells of honey with a hint of lemon. It tastes like sunshine – if that was a flavour. It’s smooth and tropical with a hint of honey. I would buy this one again for a hot summer day.
Castaway IPA
Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 6%
This IPA is more on the piney side with just a hint of citrus. It has a slight sweetness to balance the bitterness. It is pretty mild for an IPA so it’s a good beer for beginner IPA drinker. If you like BC IPA’s than this is not for you! I prefer IPA’s with a bit more citrus and a lot more flavour but overall this beer wasn’t bad.
Big Wave Golden Ale
Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 4.4%
This one is the most mild of them all – at least they’re consistent I guess. It smells very flavourful, very similar to the driftwood Entangler. It smells like a tropical Hawaiian drink.
This is a very easy drinking beer. It has a slight tropical flavour with a hint of bitterness. It ends on a sweet fruity note. I wouldn’t buy this one on its own but it I would drink it as a member of a mix pack.
