Kona Brewery

Kona Brewery have always intrigued me. Their packaging is very eye catching and their beer descriptions sound delicious so I decided it was time for me to give them a try. I bought a 12pk from Walmart in the USA for less than a 6pk costs here- sucks for us!

Fire Rock Pale Ale

Kona Brewery Pale Ale

Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 6%

This beer is pretty mild so if you want a flavourful pale ale than this isn’t your beer. It has a mild bitterness with a hint of citrus. Overall it’s a decent beer but I wouldn’t spend BC prices in it. If you’re across the boarder or somewhere without crazy liquor taxes and you want a beer to chill with this beer is worth a try.

Longboard Island Lager

Kona Brewery Lager Kona Brewery Lager

Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 4.6%

This one is my favourite Kona beer which is funny because I usually don’t care for lagers. Its a super easy drinking summer time beer. It smells of honey with a hint of lemon. It tastes like sunshine – if that was a flavour. It’s smooth and tropical with a hint of honey. I would buy this one again for a hot summer day.

Castaway IPA

Kona Brewery IPA Kona Brewery IPA

Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 6%

This IPA is more on the piney side with just a hint of citrus. It has a slight sweetness to balance the bitterness. It is pretty mild for an IPA so it’s a good beer for beginner IPA drinker. If you like BC IPA’s than this is not for you! I prefer IPA’s with a bit more citrus and a lot more flavour but overall this beer wasn’t bad.

Big Wave Golden Ale

Kona Brewery Golden Ale  Kona Brewery Pale Ale

Size: 12oz
Alc/Vol: 4.4%

This one is the most mild of them all – at least they’re consistent I guess. It smells very flavourful, very similar to the driftwood Entangler. It smells like a tropical Hawaiian drink.

This is a very easy drinking beer. It has a slight tropical flavour with a hint of bitterness. It ends on a sweet fruity note. I wouldn’t buy this one on its own but it I would drink it as a member of a mix pack.

Howe Sound Super Jupiter

It’s a little early for summer beers but since the weather has been so nice that’s all I’ve been in the mood for lately.  Super Jupiter is an amazing spring/summer beer. This is only the third beer I’ve had by Howe Sound but it has inspired me to try more.

Howe Sound– Squamish BC

Super Jupiter ISA    Super Jupiter ISA

Super Jupiter Indian Session Ale

Size: 1L
Price: $9.95 – Port Moody Liquor Store
IBU: 45
Alc/Vol: 4.5%

I bought this beer purely for the label – Marketing gets me every time!

Super Jupiter smells like your average ISA Sweet Citrus, and hops but the taste is out of this world, I guess that’s why it’s called Super Jupiter.

Super Jupiter starts and ends on a bitter note with and amazing sweet citrus sandwiched in between. The citrus flavours distinctly grapefruit – it tastes like the smell of grapefruit more than the actual taste of the fruit.

I will definitely be buying this beer again and you should too! Make sure you get it while it’s available because this beauty is a spring seasonal.

Innis Gunn – Series

**Warning to all Innis & Gunn fans- you will not like this post as I really don’t like this beer.

Innis & Gunn

One of the first things I was ever told about craft beer was that Innis & Gunn was the holy grail of all craft beers. Everyone I talked to raved about these beers and were shocked and appalled that I had never tried them. Succumbing to peer pressure I bought all of the Innis & Gunn beers that were available at the time and tried them all. Overall I am not impressed! So if all you’ve heard is good things than here is something different.

Jose, Maegan and I tasted these beers together and we all had very similar opinions – So its not just me!

Oak Aged

Innis & Gunn

Alc/Vol: 6.6%
Price: $3.35 – Port Moody Liquor Store
Size: 330ml

The oak aged beer smells like very generic beer. The smell reminded me of thirsty Thursday at the Arms. If you live in Poco you’ll know what I’m talking about- and it’s not a nice smell!

It tastes very similar to how it smells. Just like boring generic beer that a bar would call it’s house beer. It has a slight sweetness that tastes that it could be honey. Overall I’m not impressed with this beer at all.

Rum Finish

Innis & Gunn

Alc/Vol: 7.4%
Price: $3.35 – Port Moody Liquor Store
Size: 330ml

The Rum Finish was slightly better than the Oak Aged beer. It smells like rum and beer which is to be expected. It tastes like fizzy nothingness. I had high hopes for this one because it smelt so much better than the oak aged- I’m a huge fan of rum- but again this one was a flop.

It was very hard to figure out what it actually tasted like because it just fizzes in your mouth and then its gone. If you like sparkling water than here’s a perfect way to get drunk off of it. If you leave the beer in your mouth for a long time there is a hint of rum and a pretty nice flavour but who actually drinks beer like that? You’d be laughed out of the bar.

Toasted Oak IPA

Innis & Gunn

Alc/Vol: 5.6%
 Size: 330ml

Finally an Innis & Gunn beer that I actually liked! While I like it, it’s not something that I would go out and buy because there are much better IPA’s out there. But if Innis & Gunn was the only beer left in some post-apocalyptic world this is the one I would choose.

It smells pleasant over all – like citrus and hops with a hint of sweetness. It tastes pretty bitter with a balance of citrus. It was the best beer so far in this series. It wasn’t anything special but I like that it isn’t so bitter that it feels like it’s biting my tongue off- I’m not a fan of that feeling.

Scotch Whisky Porter

Innis & Gunn

Alc/Vol: 7.4%
Size: 330ml

This one smells very interesting. It smells like very alcoholic beer with a hint of smoke. I’m not a scotch drinker because I don’t like the peaty (smoky) flavour. This beer is overly peaty, it taste like pure smoke. This one was my least favourite beer, I would only give this to my worst enemies. If there was something below 1/5 I would rate this beer at that. If you are a fan of a smoky flavour than I’m sure you’ll have a vastly different opinion than me.

We all agree this one is;

Melvilles Ginger Beer

Innis & Gunn

Alc/Vol: 4.1%
Size: 500ml

I’m obsessed with ginger which is why I saved this one for last- because I knew I was going to like it.

It smells like ginger, if it didn’t I would be worried. It tastes like ginger ale with a bite. I really enjoyed this but it wouldn’t be my go-to ginger beer. I usually reach for Crabbies Ginger Beer. It tastes very similar to the Melvilles but with a lot more ginger flavour. The one redeeming feature about this beer is that its made with real ginger whereas Crabbies is only made with a small amount of ginger extract.

Cannery Blackberry Porter

Have you ever wished you could have blackberry pie but in beer form? If you have than here is your wish come true.

Cannery Brewing – Penticton, BC

Blackberry Porter                           Blackberry Porter

Size: 650ml
Alc/Vol: 6%
IBU: 45

Everything the black berry porter by Cannery promises, it delivers. It smells like something I would love to eat. At the first pour and smell I could tell that this was going to be a big and rich beer.

The best way to describe it is one big juicy blackberry. It begins with a malty flavour and transforms into a rich blackberry pie. While this beer smells and tastes like a fatty delicious dessert, I can almost guarantee you that it has way less calories- if that’s something that you care about.

There is nothing the brew masters could do to make this beer better. While it has a big blackberry flavour it isn’t overly sweet which is something I usually complain about with darker beers.

I love this beer but porters are not my go to beer which is the only reason this beer is getting a 4 instead of a 5 on the beer rating scale

Coffee Coffee Coffee- oh and beer

Recently I’ve been on an Espresso/Coffee beer kick. I’m a coffee addict so any beer that has a fake or mild coffee flavor isn’t going to get a high rating but I will mention if that’s why I’m giving it a low rating. I’ve only found stouts and porters that have appealed to me so far. I saw 1 IPA but on its list of flavours it was all over the place. Let me know if you have tried any other good ones!

For this post I’ve tried 3 beers; one from Elysian, Tofino, and Phillips

Elysian Brewery– Seattle. WA

Split Shot          Split Shot

Split Shot Milk Stout

Size: 650ml
Alc/Vol: 5.6%
Price: $7.95 – Port Moody Liquor Store

The Split Shot has a distinct sweet coffee smell with undertones of malt. This beer is a deep espresso colour with a full body. It tastes like espresso with a perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness. The espresso in this beer tastes genuine- not like fake coffee flavouring. The split shot is like a latte, full and delicious but you can only finish one- or at least I can only finish one. I’ve seen this beer in a 6 pack but the bomber bottle is the perfect size.

Tofino Coffee Porter                Tofino Coffee Porter

This coffee porter smells like my kind of mocha with a perfect balance of coffee and chocolate.

It’s flavour is amazing. I love coffee and that’s exactly what this tastes like, with just a hint of chocolate. The chocolate doesn’t taste fake which is something that I always look for in a beer. I can’t stand fake chocolate! If you’re a mocha fan than this is a good choice for you. This beer isn’t as full as the Elysian Split Shot but it is still packed full of delicious coffee flavour. Like the Split shot this one has a perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness

Both me and Meagan agree that this is at the top of our porter list

Black Jackal Stout

Size: 650ml
Alc/Vol: 8%

Black Jackal Imperial Coffee Stout

I’ll start by saying I love Phillips beer- but this one was very disappointing. If I wasn’t a huge coffee fan I think I would have liked this beer more; but since I was hoping for that intense coffee flavour this beer fell flat for me.

It doesn’t taste like an 8% beer- in a good way but it is very light for a stout. When I choose to drink a stout I hope for that full and rich body. It starts very bitter with little flavour and ends on a slight coffee note.

Overall I was disappointed in this beer but there are so many amazing Phillips beers out there so I’m not to heart broken. Both me and Meagan agreed that we wouldn’t drink this one again unless there weren’t other options- it’s still better than bud!

Dylan and Jose liked this one a bit more than us because they don’t really like coffee. This beer was much more subtle than the previous ones.

This beer looks and smells like summer. It has a fresh, citrus, fresh hop smell with a hint of coriander or something similar. I fell in love with this beer at first sip. It is definitely a hop forward pale ale but it is perfectly balanced with a citrus blast. The Pie Hole Pale Ale can stand on its own or you can add a slice of orange or grapefruit if you’re a fan of  fruit garnishes.

I would definitely buy this beer again.

Animal farm smells very hoppy and bitter. It tastes just like it smells- happy with a hint of oats and it ends on a surprising sweet note. While this beer is bitter, it’s not an over powering bitterness. It is perfectly balanced and easy to drink. This is one of the best IPA’s I have tasted- I don’t like IPA’s that attack my mouth with bitterness so if that’s your thing than this might be to mild for you.

Old Yale – Sasquatch Stout

Voted Canada’s best beer for 2014 this stout really lives up to its name. Stouts aren’t my favorite beers but this one was calling my name for two reasons.
1. It has a Sasquatch on it- and who doesn’t like that guy?!
2. It’s fierce reputation.

This stout is DARK- the bottle describes it as pitch black and they are right on the mark. The colour is very fitting for a beer that is named after such an illusive and mysterious creature. It smells like a Starbucks mocha; well I’m sure it smells like any mocha but for some reason Starbucks pops into my mind when I smell this beer.

I tasted this beer with Dylan who is a big fan of pilsners. He thought this beer smelt like mocha and pie crust- in a good way.

For me the coffee flavour is very prominent in the sasquatch stout with just a hint of chocolate. The chocolate in this stout tastes like the real deal which is very exciting. I find so many beers with chocolate end up tasting artificial and cheap but that’s definitely not the case with this one. This stout is a bit too sweet for my liking but I find that most stouts are. Despite the sweetness I would buy this beer again when I am in a dessert mood- which is pretty much all the time.

Dylan is not a huge fan of stouts but he found this one to be quite enjoyable. He said that it tastes like burnt baking, but in a good way.

Both of us would buy this again and you should too! Even if your not a huge stout fan, you will still enjoy this beer if you like mochas.

Driftwood- Entangled Hopfenweisse

I bought this beer a while ago and I just got a chance to try it, so I’m sorry if you can’t find it anywhere. It was just such a cool beer I felt like I still had to write about it.

Driftwood – Victoria, BC

Driftwood - Entangled.            Driftwood - Entangled.             Driftwood - Entangled

Size: 650ml
Alc/Vol: 7%

If you don’t know who Driftwood is you should get acquainted with their beers, I haven’t had one I didn’t love. The Entangled hopfenweisse is no exception.

The label was enough to make me buy this beer, in the winter when everything is dark it’s kind of nice to see something so bright and vibrant.

Entangled smells like and explosion of citrus, wheat, and tropical fruit. It smells very sweet- in a good way. This beer starts off tasting sweet and fruity and fades into a pleasant bitterness. It has hints of tropical fruit, citrus, and banana.

If you can’t afford to take a sunny vacation right now just grab one of these and picture yourself at the beach- the only thing you’ll be missing is the tan.

Lusty Stout

Moody Ales is a brewery that opened a few months ago in my neighborhood; since it opened its been on my ever-growing list of breweries and beers to try. Since it’s winter I figured I may as well start with a heavy one – the Lusty Stout

Moody Ales – Port Moody, BC

My family and I Tried this one in Whistler over New Year’s and we all felt the same way about this beer – It fell flat, Literally. This stout starts off with a fake chocolate flavor and ends on a slightly bitter note. The chocolate tastes like those horrible dollar store Easter eggs, you know the ones! There is not much flavor to this beer. The only good thing about this beer was its smell. It smelled like delicious dark chocolate and oatmeal. So if your one of those people that likes to just smell things instead of consuming them then this is the perfect beer for you!

Dylan says “Whatever it has, I don’t want”

My dad says “Bland, flat”

Jose “FLAT”

Overall the family and I would not drink this beer again

Having said that I still have high hopes for this brewery and will definitely check out their other beers. I hear the chipper blonde ale is AMAZING.

The Hobbit Beer- Gollum Pilsner & Smaug Stout

Like many of you I have a not so secret love for the Hobbit- well the book anyways. Don’t even get me started on the movies. I was in Whistler over the New Year’s weekend with my family, who are also fans of the Hobbit, so I figured this was the perfect time to try the new beers.

** I’ve noticed that a lot of people are trying to figure out where to buy these. Sorry non Canadians but they are only available in Canada. Central city has a where to buy app on their website. It crashes for me and is totally useless but maybe it will work better for you “Where to Buy” . Otherwise your best bet would be to call your local stores. If your in the area Port Moody Liquor Store still has lots!

Central City Brewery from Surrey, BC just released the Gollum precious Pilsner and the Smug Stout last week and they should be releasing the Bolg Belgium Style Tripel soon.

This beer was hard for me to judge. It smells like citrus and wheat which is the type of beer I typically like. The flavour is nice, it starts off with citrus and fades into a pleasant bitterness. If this beer came out in a Jug in the bar I’d be pretty happy with it but it was a $9 bottle from the liquor store. If this beers was $5 I would buy it again but that this price point I’d say its only worth it of you are REALLY into The Hobbit.

This Dark beer smells like dark chocolate with a hint of smoke. The most noticeable taste in this stout is luscious dark chocolate that then fades into a Smokey bitterness which is to be expected from a stout that was inspired by a dragon. I think the Smokey flavour is from the chili peppers that are brewed into this beer but I wouldn’t have guessed that it was chili if I hadn’t read the label. Overall I liked this beer and I would buy it again if it wasn’t a limited time buy.
